13 week Nuchal Translucency Test ScreeningFrom: Halley (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 11 Aug 2002 13:01:15 -0500 (CDT)
Hello, I am 28 years old and 13 weeks pregnant and just had the NTT Screen last week. The first tech measured it at 2.2 and 2.3 but the perinatologist measured it at 3.1mm. Anything over 3mm is considered to elevate your risk of Down's and other chromosome problems as well as heart defects. Our first baby died a few hours after she was born at full term due to pulmonary atresia so we already knew that our risk of having another baby with a cardia problem was about 5-6%. I have found articles on the web that suggest that over 92% of babies (based on study of 4000 singletons with a nuchal fold of 3-4mm) are born healthy and normal. I am still quite nervous, particulary given our history, and would like to hear about other people or patients that have gone through this and then had healthy normal babies. Why would the doctor make it sound so ominous when the stats are still overwhelmingly in our favour that this baby will be healthy and happy? Even the placement of the calipers could create a difference of .2mm couldn't it? Thank you!
