---Well, again this is a big personal choice issue. I practice Attatchment Parenting and both of my kids nursed until they were around 2 1/2 (my daughter is almost 7 now and my son is 3 1/2). Speaking personally, although I find the idea of nursing a 4 year-old to be distasteful, I can't really judge another mother's descision. I feel that weaning should be a tandem decision between mother and child. As far as I know, there certainly is no nutritional benefit in breastmilk to a healthy 2 year old, but there are still emotional benefits and I don't think that just because our society decides on some arbitrary "age" when a child "should" be weaned, that doesn't mean that society is right. I don't see any point in "forcing" my kids to wean just because someone else may think they're too old. We always have to keep in mind that weaning age has varied throughout history and still varies from culture to culture, just because we feel superior to other societies here in America, doesn't mean that we're right about everything and it wasn't very long ago at all that women were encouraged to use a bottle because the medical community honestly thought formula was better than breast. Also, not so long ago even a woman with a very tiny infant would never breastfeed in public because other people thought THAT was gross - so it just depends on your perspective. I can see questioning nursing an 8 year old (I do think that's weird), but 4 is still pretty iffy, I don't practice it, but I don't condemn it either. ---Christie P.S. If you're upset about your 6 year old seeing a woman breastfeeding a 4 year old, how do you feel about children that age seeing their mom give birth? Or seeing opposite sex parents go to the bathroom? I'm just asking because I was curious to know if it bothered you in general or just because the woman wasn't a relative.
