Re: BARBARA: About having a tubal during c-sectionFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 4 Aug 2002 07:17:46 -0500 (CDT)
Barbara, I just saw my ob/gyn about getting an IUD. He said that today's IUDs are safer than ones in the past which caused problems and gave IUDs a bad rep. If you are in mutually monogamous relationship and have no history of pelvic inflammatory disease or STDs, it would be a great option for you. He said recent studies indicate it may even be more effective than sterilization! A hormonal kind, Mirena, may make your periods lighter and less crampy, and may even make them go away altogether. Once inserted it lasts 5 years. A copper kind, Paragard, lasts 10 years. I'm getting the Paragard for only a $10 copayment, so that works out to $1 per year for birth control that's as effect or better than getting tubes tied. Plus it's easily reversible, unlike tubal. I was originally against IUD because I thought they worked by not allowing embryos to implant. But it seems their main method of working is by not allowing sperm to fertilize the egg. Just some info for you. I didn't know much about IUDs until a few days ago. Good luck to you.
