Re: 'The Pill'

Andrew, in the past, when starting the Pill, I've had doctors tell me to use alternate birth control for the first month just in case. Then again, after stopping and starting again, I've had doctors tell me that I would be protected right from the start. Basically, if you're taking the pill correctly, even if you conceive, progesterone withdrawal (the inert pills you take on days 22-28, or stopping the pill on those days if you're on the 21-day type) should cause a withdrawal bleed which would cause you to lose any fertilized egg. (This is why many abortion opponents are opposed to the pill.) However, something to keep in mind is that when the pill isn't taken correctly (every day at exactly the same time), it isn't as effective. Certain medications can interfere with metabolism of the pill (something docs don't always tell you when prescribing meds). And even when taken correctly, there's a small chance of conception.

Bottom line...your girlfriend should have gotten her period 21-28 days after starting the pill. If she hasn't gotten it yet, she may be pregnant. She should take a home pregnancy test...unless she's camping in the wilderness, she should probably have access to a convenience store that will have an HPT.

Good luck!
