Re: yeast infectionFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 31 Jul 2002 10:33:21 -0500 (CDT)
There are many causes of yeast infections. Some common causes are the use of antibiotics which kill some of the normal vaginal bacteria that keep yeast in check, diabetes and diet high in refined sugars - yeast love sugar, pregnancy because of the increases estrogen and progesterone as well as more sugar in the vagina, and people who have decreased immune functions such as those with HIV/AIDS, and people taking certain drugs such as corticosteroids(cancer patients/asthma) Tight clothing and non-cotton undergarments may also encourage the growth of yeast. Aslo, some people are just more suseptible than others. Yeast infections produce a characteristic discharge and odor as well as cause itching and irritation of the surrounding skin. A doctor can perform simple test to make sure it is a yeast infection such as pH or looking at the cells under a microscope.
