5 week miscarriage

I wanted to post a message that might help women who are worrying about the time frame for a miscarriage.

My daughter chose not to have a D&C. It took 5 weeks of bleeding, not heavy, just pretty consistant. She passed some clots and tissue and finally at 4 weeks 5 days after she first started to bleed, her HCG levels reached 0. At 5 weeks 2 days, she finally stopped bleeding. She never experienced a gush of blood...she did have some cramping and backache at about 1-2 weeks after first starting to bleed.

I guess this shows that every woman is different. The important thing seems to be to watch for signs of infection and go to your doctor to have your HCG levels checked (they should slowly go down until you reach 0 which is when all fetal tissue is passed).

It was nerve wracking for me to not know what to expect because the doctor never explained anything until yesterday. Too bad no one explained things earlier, could have spared us allot of sleepless nights.

I now know it is normal for a miscarriage to last anywhere from a day to 5 weeks and you don't have to have a gush of blood and tissue to complete the miscarriage, it could happen a bit at a time.

I had no idea that 40-50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. That is a figure that I have heard from many reliable physican sources. Some miscarriages happen in the first month and the woman just thinks she had a late heavy period.

I am thankful for internet sites like this one where you can ask questions and get input and caring answers!

My daughter and her husband will try again within the next few months.
