Re: asons for nuchal fold thickness

I know exactly how you feel because I had a similar scare recently- it's in the archives if you're interested. My son's nuchal fold measured 5.6 mm at 19 weeks (I'm 31). I got a level 2 a week later and there it only measured 3.7 mm. Nonetheless, I was still worried sick. So I got yet another Level 2 and lo and behold, it had shrunk to a mere 2.5 cm by 22 weeks. The verdict: a perfectly healthy 8-pounder born in May. What a relief! My first words when he was born: "Is he ok? Are you sure? Is he really ok?" Last week, I watched the videotape of my son's ultrasound for the first time since last December- I'd been afraid to watch it because it captured all the measurements and actually SHOWS the measurement of 5.6 mm on screen. Problem with measuring nuchal fold is you're talking about MILLIMETERS!! Mere fractions of a centimeter difference- and if baby is positioned a certain way, it can seriously throw off the measurement. Nuchal fold measurement is not currently considered the standard of care. There are only a handful of OB's who are certified in performing this measurement- this certification is very new and applies only to first trimester measurements- there are no conclusive data to date on the validity of second trimester measurements. Besides, most OB's use a cut-off of 6 mm at 20 weeks- anything less is considered perfectly normal, so that's all in your favor. But I do know that you will still worry because I've been there myself. The only thing that finally helped me get over my worry was finding a sympathetic perinatologist who agreed to do an amnio if I wanted one. I finally opted against it because it wouldn't have made a difference in my decision. But it made me feel so much better to have someone give me a CHOICE by saying "I don't think you need an amnio because your chances of a chromosomal abnormality are very slim. But I'll do the amnio right now if that's what it takes to make you relax." That's all I needed to hear! Hope this helps just a little. Please, try to relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. And please let us know how it turns out, either way. Congratulations- I wish you the best!
