leaking amniotic fluidFrom: Angeline (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 24 Jul 2002 16:56:07 -0500 (CDT)
I tested + for gbs, so I was very careful to watch for leaking amniotic fluid. Five days after I was due, I had random (not continuous) leaking, and called the afterhours line. I was met at the hosp. by an ob from the practice I see. She said she "couldn't convince herself" it was amnio fluid b/c it "didn't quite fern" under the microscope, and the amnio test swab "didn't quite turn." I was sent home w/ a swab to use the next evening. The next day, I lost much fluid continuosly. That evening, it turned + for amnio fluid, so I called again - the ob said it probably just turned b/c of blood released by my exam the prior evening, and to just keep my 5pm appointment for the next day. Once I was there, they said, "Hey! Did you know your membranes have ruptured?!", and I was induced, giving birth the next day (8 days after I was due) w/ a nasty uterine infection. All is okay now - but I'm terrified of getting pregnant again, b/c I'm scared of this reoccuring, and getting another infection. My question is: Is there anything I can do differently/better next time to avoid this? Are swabs available in stores?
