Jill, We lost a baby at 19 weeks, possibly from IC. My uterus was formerly totally divided in two cavities, so it was unclear as to whether my cervix was truly incompetent or the baby was forced out like a piston. I did have painless dilation and prolapse of the membranes. Both my OB and my maternal/fetal specialist recommended just going ahead and doing the cerlcage rather than monitoring for funneling, and the earlier the better. "Risks are minimal," said the perinatologist. With this new pregnancy, I had a MacDonald cerclage placed at 11 weeks, LMP, after a thorough US to check on baby's viability. Am now over 18 weeks along and everything is fine. My cervix is longer now than it was at 11 weeks. Can't say that the cerclage will not cause problems later on, but so far, so good, and anything is better than another sudden IC loss. Am being watched like a hawk and was treated for infection (bacterial vaginosis). Next week I want to be checked again for it, as my BV has a tendency to recur every 4-6 weeks in spite of painstaking hygiene. Best of luck to you.
