Re: scared teen againFrom: anon (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 19 Jul 2002 08:11:08 -0500 (CDT)
It's not flippant, and nobody ever said abstinence doesn't work. Tthe problem is when people are given an abstinence only education. Then they miss out on the mechanics of sex, how it works and what the realities of it are. Then you have questions like we just got on this board. When you teach someone the full story, and then you can encourage them to be abstinent, that's a whole different kettle of fish than an abstinence only education, which consists of "don't do it". I'm a UUA, and our sex ed program (Our Whole Lives) encompasses everything there- the biology, the emotions, and the consequences of it all. To me, if you give a kid enough information, you can cancel out the urban legends and misinformation, and then the kid will truly know how big of a deal sex is, because believe me, the mystery is way gone by the time they get done with our classes. That was my point. I get yours, but it's not particularly counter to mine. Abstinence is 100%. Absolutely. It's just how you arrive at that decision tht matters to me. I fel it should come frokma wealth of education and information, not "just because".
