home pregnancy tests and missing periodsFrom: dawn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 29 Jun 2002 16:36:42 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Doctor and friends, Okay, I went off the pill in the first week of April. Got another (unassisted and normal-seeming) period May 15 -- 38 day cycle, a little long (normally around 35) but not terribly. Since May 15, nothing -- as of today, that makes it 45 days and counting. Pregnant? I thought maybe, since we've been trying, and since there's been no sign of my period on the way. But I took a pregnancy test yesterday evening (44 days after the first day of last period) and it came up negative. Here's the question: two of my close friends both had situations where the HPT's showed negative after their periods were a week late, and their blood test a week later showed positive. My internist, when I mentioned this, said that she's seen a lot of false negatives w/ HPT. My question: is it common for HPT to show false negs? Should I get a blood test? If I'm not pregnant, where's my period? The last time I went off the pill (last summer) I was completely regular basically right away. I don't know if I'm grasping at straws here, but I don't know what's up. Thanks for the help, Dawn
