Cervix opening before menstruation or mucus plug?

I understand the cervix opens up before you start your period and the mucus thins out and creates some discharge before menstruation. My last day of my period was May 24, my cycle is 40 days on average, so July 2 I should menstruate. My husband and I had sex using the withdrawal method on the 16th twice, the 21, & 22. My question is I had a dime size amount of white, creamy discharge today that was pale yellow, almost looked like wet cotton fiber. I have pre-menstruation symptoms like sore breasts, but one strange thing that I have been feeling when I cough, walk, go up & down stairs, and make a bowel movement is a pinching, cramp in the center of my abdomen. Given this inf. could the discharge be my pending period, is that type of discharge associated with menstruation in that amount? Or does it sound more like a plug being made?
