growth question

I have read in many articles and on websites lately that babies grow at their own rates even in utero and that not all babies develop on the traditional schedule. Is this true? If so could it be responsible for differing dates between US and LMP? Could fetuses go through growth spurts at slightly different stages than most like babies can? Thank you for any answers you can provide. This has got me curious. Have a great evening:o).
