Re: length of time breast feeding???From: Claudia Twisdale RN (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 18 Jun 2002 19:18:06 -0500 (CDT)
I applaud you for sticking with the breast feeding! Breastfeeding is best for baby period. That said, breast feeding should be a good experience for mom also. I think as long as you are comfortable with how things are going, baby is gaining weight, then by all means keep going as long as possible. HOWEVER, sometimes breast feeding does not go as planned, or there is a medical reason for mom not to nurse, or she chooses not to. At that point infant formula is safe and nutritious. My 1st was a poor breast baby, very fussy, and just when I thought we may be getting somewhere, at 5 weeks, I had to undergo surgery and was in hospital for a week. Needles to say breast feeding went out the window. 2nd baby was a joy to nurse, but I had to retunr to work at 4 weeks post partum, and with 12 hour busy L&D shifts, could not keep up with milk production. I would have loved to be able to nurse my girls longer, but it did not work out that way. I did not obsess over it, and enjoyed (and still enjoy) all the time I spend with them :)
