exposure to illnesses during pregnancyFrom: mel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 11 Jun 2002 12:48:04 -0500 (CDT)
I am 22 weeks pregnant, and everything seems to be going good so far, except that I have been very sick twice, this last time I really feel terrible... I work at a day care, and move from pre-school to infants all time, and they (the children) are always hacking and coughing, and getting sent home with high temps and weird illnesses...5ths disease went around last summer, among other communicable diseases I know are dangerous to pregnant women. I dont want to be paranoid, but we tried very hard to conceive this child, and I dont want to do anything to risk its health in any way..since I dont plan on staying after I deliver, my husband advises me to quit now, to avoid any worry during the rest of the pregnancy. my doctor doesnt seem remotely concerned about anything, let alone my exposure to communicable diseases at work, and hasnt even shown interest in testing for antibodies to certain dangerous ones for fetuses...so am I being crazy, or would the next few months be safer for me and baby if I work elsewhere...I have taken courses for childcare workers, and the nurses teaching courses always stressed the importance and seriousness of this issue, why isnt my doctor? thanks for your time, whomever offers imput!
