I used HPTs ALOT before I was certain I was pregnant. All the major brands worked for me with the exception of Confirm. I consistently got positive results (or immediately clearly visible lines the same color as the control line) when I was not pregnant. I got a couple of results I wasn't sure about with First Response Early test before I was pregnant. When we found out about this baby we used Clear Blue Easy first. I personally prefer it because I find it easier to clearly read. Due to a mix up when I initially tried to have my pregnancy confirmed at a doctor's office I used EPT, First Response, and CVS's early test and all were VERY clearly positive. What I've learned is if you get a faint line, retest in a few days and if you still aren't sure see your doc.
