Hi Gina, The main ingredient in plain Robitussin is Guaifenesin (guessing on the spelling), and some its purpose is to thin mucous. It works in your chest/head if you have a cold...and also affects your cervical mucous to varying degrees with different people. Some people use it while trying to get pregnant in the hopes that it will give them a thinner cervical mucous that is more conducive to sperm mobility. Hope that helps answer your question!
