High risk for downsFrom: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 31 May 2002 11:43:15 -0500 (CDT)
I am 25 years old and 18w 2d according to u/s (17w 1d according to LMP) and just got back results of triple screen. My regular OB called and said I am "high risk" for downs. I asked the ratio, which she wouldn't give to me over the phone. She only said that anything over 1/250 is abnormal, and within the abnormal range I am "high risk." She has immediately scheduled an appointment for me this Monday at a large metro hospital (not my normal one) with a perinatologist and a genetic counselor as well as a level II u/s, some other tests and is encouraging the amnio. What type of results would warrant this kind of follow-up? What would the range have to be to be called "high risk." I've known women who have had abnormal results from the triple screen, but their doctors didn't take these kind of steps. When I tried to get more information out of her she just said that the genetic counselor would answer my questions about the results. She just said that I should bring my husband and to expect to be there a long time. I know that I just need to wait until Monday, but I'm wondering from you MD's what the results would have to be for you to order such follow-up? Thank you so much for answering my questions!
