You can't have your period without ovulating; However; You can ovulate without having had your period...

This is because a true menstrual bleeding period is followed by the breaking down of the corpus luteum which forms to maintain the uterine lining AFTER ovulation. So you can be annovulatory (not ovulate) for months then ovulate and get pregnant, skipping the period that was on its way! Hope that made sense!
