Induction at 37 weeks due to small baby - confused!From: Monique (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 30 May 2002 22:09:35 -0500 (CDT)
At 36 weeks, I have had an easy and healthy pregnancy so far. Up until my 36 week appointment, fundal height has been right on. At 34 weeks I measured 34 cm, but at 36 weeks I measured only 33 cm. I had noticed that I was able to eat more, etc., which I thought might indicate that the baby had dropped away from my stomach a bit. Dr. suggested an ultrasound just to be safe. Ultrasound estimates baby's weight at 4lbs 15oz (8.5 percentile). Dr. recommends induction next week (37 weeks) to be on the safe side in case there is a problem with the uterine environment (this is what he recommends when baby's weight estimate is under the 10th percentile). Placental blood flow seemed fine (measured at 2.5, doc said under 3 was good- no idea what those measurements are or mean). Non-stress test was fine. My gut feeling is that the baby has just dropped and is fine, and that I am just genetically "programmed" to have a smaller baby (I was small, 6lbs 11 oz and 2 weeks late). 1) Is it common practice to induce given the situation I describe above? 2) Is an amnio needed to verify lung maturity when inducing at 37 weeks? (doc does not plan to do one) 3) Is there any difference for the baby's development if he/she comes out at 37 weeks and grows on the outside or if he/she is allowed to grow on the inside for another 3 weeks? 4) What should I be asking my doc in order to make sure I have all options and info I need? I've read all about inducing due to a large baby, but never because baby is small!
-- Thanks, Monique
