Treatment for GBBS prior to labor is not indicated unless it is found as the cause of an UTI. Penicillin is cheaper,(about 30 x's) works just as well and is less likely to lead to the rise of resistant strains of e. coli and other organisms. Amoxicillin is overkill. Both amoxicillin and penicillin are excreted in the urine and will treat UTI caused by an organism that is sensitive to the drug.
