Well, you will always have GBS, the difference is how heavily you are colonized at any one point in time. GBS can cause things like UTI, etc. It could be that your doc felt that giving it now might forstall something like that, but I would expect that you will also have an IV in labor. Side effects? Well, watch out for yeast inf and poss diarhea, otherwise pretty safe from what I have heard. It could also be that with your risk of PTL he wants to make sure the GBS is well under control.
