Post-partum bleeding led to hysterectomyFrom: Janel (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 23 May 2002 15:51:32 -0500 (CDT)
After delivery of my child and placenta, my uterus continued to bleed excessively for over 3 hours. My physicians were unable to stop the bleeding and after several different attempts had to stop the bleeding with a hysterectomy. My question is: is the placenta supposed to be pulled from the mother, or is it supposed to be delivered naturally. My physician literally pulled my placenta from my body with a forceps and it was extremely painful, like it was being ripped out. I was not asked to push at all. Could have this caused the excessive bleeding? I am trying to come to terms with the fact that I am 29 years old and cannot ever have children again. My physicians have been nice to answer all of my questions, but I am scared to ask them this question because I don't want them to think I am going to sue them or something. I just want to know if it is normal procedure in a delivery to pull out the placenta in such a harsh fashion. I have one other child and it didn't hurt at all when I delivered the placenta. I had no other problems in my pregnancy. Please advise---Thank you
