>Janice, It sure can be, and both mother and baby are at risk. There is a risk for premature labor, mental retardation,growth retardation, blood transfusion and death at delivery. And just because she's always been anemic is a poor excuse- anemia gets a lot worse when you are creating another human being.Check the archives- there may be more information. This post makes me very sad because this is treatable and easily prevented. Also, I get the impression that WIC needs to remind her to see the OB for routine prenatal care, further compromising the future for this child. She is lucky to have a good friend like you.
