Maria,

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I went through a similar situation in January...except my AFP came back very bad. First of all, what types of defects of the heart did they mention? There are things that are called echogenic foci or "bright spots" of the heart that are not true defects but are considered "soft markers" for chromo abnormalitites. Were you told your ratios for the AFP test? Even if everything comes back fine, they will give you a ratio reflecting your odds of a chromo or neural tube problem. Usually, anything higher than a 1 in 200 (higher than 200) is considered a negative (good) screen. Some labs have a higher number than 200. Anything lower than 1 in 200 is considered a positive (bad) screen becasue the risk of loss due to miscarriage or amnio is less than the risk of having a problem. Since your screen came back negative (good), the probability of having a prob is less than the risk of miscarriage or preg loss. Yes, there is always that "1" in the 1 in ______, but the higher the latter number, the better your chances. I have attached a link for you...called the Choroid Plexus Cyst website. Post your question here and you will get lots of answers from people who have been in your shoes. Many of these people had/have other markers for Downs and for Trisomy 18...some have had amnio, some are waiting it out, but you will be moved by all of their stories and experiences. POST YOUR QUESTYION THERE!!!!

Take Care, Love & Prayers, Nikki R. (edd 06/20)
