Actually the theory behind this isn't hogwash. It's based on the fact the male sperm tend to be faster swimmers with shorter life spans, whereas female sperm are slower swimmers, but live longer. Whether one can accurately time intercourse enough to give one type of sperm over another an advantage is certainly up to question, but it remains that the issue of different attributes between male and female sperm types is real.
