Re: Cord Blood Banking

Hello Shawn,

My husband and I also decided to bank our baby's cord blood. After researching several companies, we made our decision based on the following:

(1) Our OB was most familiar with one company in particular. She has worked with this company before. We felt it was important that the person who delivers our baby be comfortable working with the kit and the materials the company provides.

(2) The proximity of the storage facility. Since the cord blood must arrive at its destination within 36 - 48 hours, we chose a facility that is closest to where we live (this became particularly important in the days following Setp. 11, when air travel in the US was stopped).

(3) The price charged vs. services offered. We carefully considered the type of service and charges each company offered. We found a few companies were willing to negotiate their prices. We were able to negotiate free storage for the first year from the company we decided to go with. They were willing to be flexible in price in order to get our business.

(4) The hours the company offers customer support. We chose a company that offers 24/7 support. If you have questions about packing and shipping the cord blood, you want someone available 24/7 to help.

You and your wife are to be commended for making the decision to bank your baby's cord blood. I hope this information is helpful, and good luck with everything!

-Melissa
