Re: Where should the top of the uterus be and more ?'sFrom: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 11 Apr 2002 21:26:11 -0500 (CDT)
Actually, you can rent one comparable to that used by your doc from Baby Beat for 30/month. It sounds like this is the kind you have - those that you get at the store are (as the other poster noted) generally worthless. With a high-quality doppler, you will be able to pick up the baby's h/b at the same time your doc can- 9-14 weeks generally. The sound you describe sounds to me like it IS the baby's heartbeat - depending on where you are picking it up it can sound like a galloping horse, a washing machine, a steady drumming, etc. Ask your doc at the next visit whatmakes the h/b vary in sound - I know it sounds different if picked up through the placenta, the cord etc. Regarding the location of the uterus, I believe that it just starts rising above the pelvis at 12-14 weeks. By 20 weeks it will be about halfway to the navel, by the end of the 2nd trimester it will be roughly at or slightly above the navel, and it will continue to expand up into the ribcage during the third trimester. After about 20 weeks (maybe 24?) your doc will probably start measuring your fundal height with a tapemeasure- the general rule of thumb is that you will measure 1 cm for every week of pregnancy (36 cm = 36 weeks). Sounds like you are doing great!!!!!!! No worries!
