Chances of Conceiving at Age 40 Based on Time Magazine ArticleFrom: Alison (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 10 Apr 2002 07:33:08 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I am 40 (turning 41 next month). I have had 2 m/cs in the past year. One at 12 wks after seeing a h/b at 8w6d and a blighted ovum diagnosed at 7w. I have just finished a workup with an RE for recurrent m/cs. Everything came back normal (except a border line hypothyroid which is being treated with Synthroid) including a fsh of about 5.7. I am writing because there was an article in Time Magazine this week which is about fertility and the gist of it is that women having babies in their 40's is more of a myth than a reality. They gave some statistics - at age 40, 50% of your eggs are damaged; at ate 42, 90% of your eggs are damaged. That at age 40, your chance of conceiving each month is 7.8% There were other equally horrible stats. My question is this, because I have conceived twice in the past year and because all my tests are normal and my fsh is good, does that mean my chances for conceiving may be better than the 7.8% each month (plus I have 2 healthy children born in 1995 and 1997)? Thank you for your help, Alison
