Calcium, Iron, and SynthroidFrom: Daphne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 8 Apr 2002 12:25:22 -0500 (CDT)
I am about to enter my 20th week of pregnancy so I need to start taking iron supplements tomorrow. Currently, I take two Centrum every morning, TUMS as a calcium supplement (600-1200mg/day) and synthroid every day (which must be on an empty stomach). Now that I'm starting the iron, how can I time these supplements/Meds for maximum absorption as I know that calcium and iron compete for absorption? Would the Iron or Calcium supps interfere with the Synthroid? Here's how I was going to schedule my doses. Please let me know if this regimen is not wise or sub-optimal. Morning: Skim Milk with breakfast, 2 Centrums, Mid-Morning: TUMS (600 mg), 1 cup skim milk with coffee Lunch: Glass of skim milk or non-fat Yogurt or 600mg TUMS Dinner: Avoid too much calcium other than what is in vegetables Before Bed (empty stomach assumed): SlowFE Iron Supplement, Synthroid Thanks. Daphne
