Re: 33 weeks and edgy about waterFrom: Zsofy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 6 Apr 2002 19:45:31 -0600 (CST)
Well, contractions start small and get worse as time goes on. In a first labour, there tends to be a lot of sitting around and WAITING - it is nothing like the movies! I remember sitting around, 3cm dilated, thinking if this is the pain for 3cm what does it feel like at 10cm! it took me 14 hours to reach 10cm!!! Plenty of time!!! It feels like very bad period pain to start off with, and then becomes the worst pain you could ever, ever imagine - I honestly felt like my life was over, I was going to die. Like everything below the waist was being slowly exploded and imploded at the same time. I was barely functioning as a thinking human being, the pain was so bad!!! But then I came out the other end thinking it was the greatest achievment and experience of my life and I couldn't wait to do it again. I understand the fear - I was afraid - but if you're anything like me, you'll love it despite the pain. Just ensure you have good support ppl and if you have access to a bath, you'll be less inclined to need drugs. Drugs can be great, but not having an epidural was the best thing I ever did. :) BEst wishes. P.S Not everyone has a spectacular breaking of waters as a precursor to labour. Only one of my three had waters break in any gushing way, and I had polyhydramnios with him. Chances are it'll happen in the delivery room (wherever that may be) and you won't even notice.
