Epidural caused scrolling vision, stuttering, loss of motor controlFrom: Allison (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 1 Apr 2002 17:33:17 -0600 (CST)
I had an unusual experience with anesthesia during the birth of my first and only child that I hope to avoid if I get pregnant again. I was given an epidural during induction and all seemed well. It numbed me nicely, but I was able to move a little. Because I failed to progress and was hypertensive, I was prepped for a c-section. As it was explained to me, I was given a final larger dose through the epidural and unhooked. Almost immediately, I began to stutter and my vision began to scroll like a television that has lost horizontal control. I also lost much of my motor control. However, I was mentally quite lucid. Because the increased anesthesia did not numb me further (I could move my legs for instance), I had to endure a very painful operation without the ability to really communicate. My doctor and anesthesiolgist did not seem to take me seriously, acting as if they had never seen such a reaction, and assuming it was a panic attack. After the c-section, I was given a dose of morphine and felt absolutely no relief. A skeptical nurse administered a second dose and the edge was barely taken off. Recovery was extremely painful, but I had no infections. I would like to know if I had an allergic reaction. What kind of medication is administered through an epidural? Would a spinal be a better choice if I must have another c-section (I have cryotherapy scars on my cervix and it didn't dilate much the first time). Is this kind of reaction documented in the medical literature? Thanks for any insight.
