Re: To LeeAnne Re: For Dr. and women 35 and younger who have had 2 or more missed abortions due to trisomy! From: LeeAnne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 30 Mar 2002 19:34:07 -0600 (CST)
I was 11 weeks with the first and had seen ht beat on scan 2 weeks earlier. We had a D&C but prob wasnt necessary in retrospect, we were already actively miscarrying--severe cramps/contractions, passed tissue, etc. The second we did nothing...I was beginning a training program for midwifery and visiting in another state. Hard as it may be to believe (hard for me to believe now) the doc I saw when I began miscarrying at 14 weeks simply railed at me for 25 minutes about how "planning to see a midwife but running to a doctor when you run into trouble is like planning to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff but calling the ambulance first, just in case you survive..." I ended up with a uterine infection--104 temp, fould odor, etc. I consider it amazing I have my fertility...the third was an uncomplicated 5 week miscarriage, naturally. The fourth was 8 weeks, naturally. The fifth was a classic missed AB. I went with D&C the day after we found out as, frankly I was both very mindful of my previous infection, as well as just being too emotionally unable to wait it out. Also, I knew that we could have trouble if I began bleeding very heavily while I was at home alone with my children who were 9 years and under. (I had five at that time) I found out at 12 weeks, baby was 8 weeks in size. Whenever women ask me as a midwife what to do, I must confess to being very conservative. If they are past 6 or 7 weeks, I am even more leary and make absolutely sure that they are aware of the risks and warning signs. I deal with many conservative Christian women who are very much desirous of avoiding a D&C due to any connection with abortion due to their pro-life views. I understand, I have been there, I have much the same views. But balanced with the risks attendent with waiting, it remains that there is often no clear cut answer nor absolutely no easy way. I am so sorry that you are experiencing this. I remember my thrid-in-a-row loss. It was such a bleak time and I still am sad when I remember those times...
