Re: For Dr. and women 35 and younger who have had 2 or more missed abortions due to trisomy! From: LeeAnne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 30 Mar 2002 13:12:52 -0600 (CST)
This is not exactly what you asked for, but I will say that I have had five losses, three of which were my first three pregnancies. My thrid misc occured when I was 23. Not exactly high time for genetic malformations to occur. We did not have any kind of genetic testing, we didnt see that it would make a practical difference to us. We continued trying figuring if it was a genetic cause, figured could be done to aid the situation. (Being in the 1980's) We had our first baby a year after our third miscarriage. Our odds werent looking great--a one in four success rate. We continued trying and had more babies and losses. (More than most!) We had three losses, then two babies, a loss, three more babies, a loss and two more babies and we are 25 weeks pregnant with number eight. Our nagging question was heightened by the fact that we had five losses, to six babies, and all our babies were girls. We wondered whether we had a genetic defects with our male children to have numbers like we did. This question is still unanswered completely, though our seventh child, our first son mediated that concern *somewhat*. Technically, what happened to us, and you can occur and still be just rotten luck. If one in four pregnancies is likely to be lost, well, you *could* lose 3 (or more) and have it just be bad luck. I think we figured the odds to be one in 64 that we would have three losses in a row. Again, in our case, if the odds are 50/50 for either gender, the odds of having six girls in a row would be one in 64. Although unlikely, one *could* pick up a coin at random and toss it and have it turn up heads thirty times in a row. Odds of this are low but it wouldnt necessarily mean that the coin is bogus. The same thing *could* be happening with you. Only you and your husband can know the level of comfort you have with continuing to try and with any testing or treatment, but I wanted to give you some encouragement that at one point I was in shoes very similar to yours and I am now surrounded by more noise and cookie crumbs that I ever would have imagined possible.
