Re: I'm almost in despair:such a fast doubling rate of hcg and possibility for trisomy? From: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 28 Mar 2002 15:25:30 -0600 (CST)
I'm NOT a doc and I know you won't rest assured until you get a professional opinion on your question. However, I just wanted to let you know that in this pregnancy (currently 35 weeks) my HCG level was 64 at 14 days past ovulation (dpo) and came back at 1300 at 16 dpo - a doubling rate of every 11 hours or so. As it turns out, it was a lab error, and my real rate on day 2 was 234 - a doubling rate of about 26 hours (faster than yours, in other words). My midwife told me that BOTH rates were acceptable - that high HCG did not automatically indicated downs or molar pregnancy, and that they wanted to see the HCG double AT LEAST every 48 hours, but faster was also a-ok. Both my triple screen and level II ultrasound revealed a baby that is apparently completely normal and healthy. Of course, we won't kknow for sure until we see him for ourselves, but his ultrasound measurements (I've had 4 or so to check the position of the placenta) have all been right on, and my high-risk ob has noted absolutely no abnormalities. Here's a link to a great site about HCG, and the wide variations in what is considered normal: http://www.paternityangel.com/Articles_zone/BHCG_Levels/HCG-3.htm According to this data, HCG at 6 weeks of pregnancy can range between 15,000 to over 184,000 (and remember that the levels would rise from 6 weeks to 6 weeks and 2 days, when yours was measured). Anyway, like I said I'm not a doc but I did just want to share with you that mine were rising even faster than yours, and I have a big huge baby belly with every expectation of meeting a healthy, normal baby boy in a few short weeks. I hope the docs are able to give you some comfort. Best wishes,
-- Amanda
