Re: Important HCG questionFrom: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 25 Mar 2002 15:17:03 -0600 (CST)
Hi there, not a doc but I've had some experience with this that I just wanted to share...I'm currently in my second pregnancy, and I had brown bleeding at 7 and 9 weeks. Both times, cervix was closed and doc wasn't concerned (I also went to ER the second time, convinced I was miscarrying.) I'm now in my third trimester, and as far as we are able to tell I was experiencing some bleeding from the cervix, not from the pregnancy itself...so try not to stress too hard (yeah, right!!). He told me that there are lots of things that can cause this kind of bleeding, including cervicitis, sexual intercourse, yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis, etc.... I read on this forum over the weekend that, according to one of the docs, over half of women experience some 1st trimester bleeding, and about 75% of those go to term. I also remember reading during my spotting that brown bleeding is the best possible kind of bleeding to have (if you have to choose), as it indicates "old blood." Dr. Wang answered another poster today that HCG quits doubling after about 6 weeks of pregnancy (I had read somewhere else that it was after 10,000). Without knowing your dates, I'd say if you tested at 27 on 3/11 that was right about the time you missed your period (making you 4 weeks LMP), which would now make you around 6 weeks. Also, your levels are very close to doubling from 3/20 - 3/24, off by about 900 which could easily be accounted for by the time of day the tests were done, the laboratory used, etc. (and I've read that some docs say it should double every 24-36 hours.) Could you ask your doc to give you an ultrasound this week to check for a fetal pole and heartbeat? Knowing your history he should be willing to oblige.
He said he wanted to check my HCG levels
