Not a doctor, but someone who used to moderate a pregnancy infertility board, and you are completely right that so many women report symptoms for which there can be no physical cause for at the point that they report them. I truly believe that you can't have any noticeable symptoms attributable to pregnancy until post implantation- when you get a hormonal change in your body signaled by the implantation. Prior to that, nothing has changed chemically in your body, so I don't see how any symptoms wouldbe attributable to a pregnancy.

I found, that many times the women who reported the strongest early symptoms- like 4 or five DPO, were not the ones who would turn out to be pregnant on any given month. Of course, there were always exceptions, and my experience is far from a scientific study, but the mind is a very powerful thing, and wanting to be pregnant can making you notice symptoms that may be part of your normal PMS type routine in ways that you have never noticed them before. Doesn't mean they are actually any different.

Early pregnancy signs and PMS signs are virtually indistinguishable- I think it's just when someone wants to be pregnant, they intrepret them differently.

I think the real key is what happens after implantation, and for the vast majority of women, what happens in the first few weeks and days after a positive pregnancy test- that's when true symptoms of pregnancy really start to appear.
