Re: home doppler question for doctorFrom: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 22 Mar 2002 08:53:21 -0600 (CST)
I'm NOT a doc so please don't get upset at me for posting but I went through something similar and just wanted to share...My doc could not find the h/b with his doppler at 10 weeks. I rented one from babybeat, and found it myself just after 12 weeks. I am somewhat overweight, and I'm sure that has something to do with it. Went back to doc at 13 weeks and they had no problem hearing it, and told me that their "standard" position is that they expect to hear the h/b in their office by 13 weeks. With some patients they can hear it earlier, but with many they cannot and they don't want to panic or upset anyone unneccessarily. In fact, I know of other practices that don't even start checking until 12-13 weeks because it is such a crap shoot. At 12 weeks it took me about 15-20 minutes to find it, you're talking about a tiny little fetus that is hanging out at or below the level of your pubic bone. Don't worry, just wait a few weeks and try again. Also, if this is your first pregnancy you might have difficulty knowing where to listen or what to listen for. If you can't find it after 12 weeks ask for an ultrasound to confirm presence of heartbeat. Good luck!
