Sudafed in pregnancy?From: Kris (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 16 Mar 2002 08:16:34 -0600 (CST)
I have two conflicting opinions on taking sudafed in pregnancy. I complained to my OB that after coming off a 10 day head cold and flu bug my ear hurt. My OB said to take sudafed and have the ear checked by the ENT. The ENT saw redness but not an inner ear infection but hard to say if the tube was irritated. He suggested to ride it out, which I did, and pain went away after a few days. I asked the ENT if I should take the suggestion of the OB and use the sudafed. The ENT was very firm that I should not use sudafed in pregnancy and suggested that its out of vogue now after recent info that sudafed can constrict blood flow in the vessels to the placenta. He said for years its been viewed as safe but now in question and don't take it. He gave me a prescription for erythomcin (sp) to be filled if needed. Days later I started another sore throat and sinus pain with blowing yellow/green. I had an appt with my OB within a few days later. I asked if I should give an anotibiotic a try. He again said no and only sudafed. I told him what the ENT said about sudafed and my OB said its just that ENT guys have their own bag of tricks and that risk to placenta is unfounded. Just a side note I have a history of placenta abruption in my last pregnancy so when I hear the word placenta being possibly affected I get nervous. I am 2 weeks from term. I don't know what to do with these differing opinions on sudafed safety. I need some direction on the safety of sudafed, a consenus of safety using it near term?
