it is part of the recommended prenatal panel. Docs (and moms and baies) have gotten burned by assuming that thier "nice" patients won't have STDs. Sometimes the women is the victim of a cheating spouse; sometimes she is the one having a little hanky panky on the side -- but in any event, it is not safe to assume.

screening for GBs is to do a swab from the lower thrid of the vagina AND the rectum
