Any diabetic wanting to get pregnant should see her Maternal-Fetal Medicine (Perinatologist{high risk Doctor}) at least 3 months before attempting to get pregnant and should get her blood sugars in very good control BEFORE getting pregnant. This decreases the number of birth defects almost back to level found in non-diabetics. Being overweight increases complications whether diabetic or not. If one looks at all women who weigh at least 250 during their pregnancy, over 50% of tehm will need to have a cesarean delivery. The heavier the patient, the higher the complication rate from cesarean or any surgery for that matter.
