Re: Spotting at 23 weeks

I'm NOT a doc, but I have experienced some spotting in this pregnancy (#2, currently 32 weeks). After several u/s early on, my doc informed me that I may have a general irritation of my cervix and that it is nothing to worry about. Apparently, the cervix is a lot more sensitive and vascular when pregnant, and if it is irritated (as with intercourse) it might shed some blood. Blood that has stayed in the vagina for a while is brown, whereas "fresh" blood is red. During this pg I have had two abnormal pap smears, although at my annual exam 6 months before I conceived all was normal, which supported the docs theory that the cervix is just a little sensitive right now. You might want to ask your doc to swab you for bacterial vaginosis and yeast, just to rule those out. And of course, if you begin to bleed in any real quantity, or have cramps or lower backache, or just generally don't feel right, get to the doc right away! Hope they can give you some good professional advice.

Good luck, and congratulations!
