Urinary Tract infection or vaginalFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 1 Mar 2002 09:26:00 -0600 (CST)
I have a uti question. Here is my recent history: I am 24 weeks. I had a sterile catch last week that showed no growth. I had a mid-stream catch this week that showed enteroccocus 10-50,000 colonies. Due to slightly recurrent uti's, I have been placed on Macrobid 100 mg qd. Now that this slight infection came up, my doc said to take the Macrobid b.i.d. for 3 days and then resume prophylactic therapy qd. Here are my questions: 1) I realize that this isn't a major infection, but if I was taking Macrobid 1x a day, will twice a day kill the infection? 2) Since I had a steile catch which showed no growth on Tues. Feb 19, does this sound more like a vaginal infection? My doc did a culture on Feb. 12. it showed no strep b. He said that if there was any other bacterial infection it would have showed up, because it was a non-specific culture. Would an overgrowth of enteroccocus showed up? 3) If it is vaginal, is this dangerous as far as PROM, etc.? 4) But either way, since the culture showed suscepitibility to Macrobid, it should clear it right? Even if it came from the vaginal area? 5) He just did a urine culture based on my history, I believe the urine dipstick came up negative, so does that lessen the seriousness of this infection because other women wouldn't even know they were walking around with it? Thank you so much for your help. Sorry so lengthy. Just a history of 3 m/c's, which would make any person neurotic.
