'Gross' indications of a healthy placenta? Routine testing?From: Naomilou3 (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 27 Feb 2002 14:34:05 -0600 (CST)
Hi - I'm 36.5 weeks w/#3 and have not had an ultrasound since 24 weeks. I've had an incessant thirst throughout the PG (I'm well hydrated at about 3 liters/day), but passed my GCT, though only 10 points below the cutoff, w/a pre-test fast. At today's OB visit, my fundal height was perfect, baby was nice and active, and heartrate was 148. I've gained 30 pounds total, but no weight in the last 2 weeks, despite no diet modifications (other than giving up chocolate for Lent, boohoo). I started out at an average weight for my frame. The thirst and the "borderline" GCT result (if there is such a thing) has me concerned that somehow, GD was "missed." I've heard that GD can deteriorate/age the placenta. My questions: 1. With a normal fundal height, active baby, and normal heartbeat, is it likely that my placenta remains healthy? 2. Is it ususal practice to check fluid levels and placental health/functioning by ultrasound, and should I have this done? Thanks
-- Kim, age 35
