Beta Thalassemia Minor and High Risk Pregnancy???From: Susan (anonymous@obgyn.net)Thu, 21 Feb 2002 12:59:28 -0600 (CST)
I have Beta Thalassemia Minor which is characterized for me by fatigue and shortness of breath, but so far only while pregnant and/or nursing. I am currently 10w 1d pregnant with my second child. I have an 8 month old son who was delivered via C-section due to his large size and my small size on the day after our due date. Pregnancy was normal as was the delivery despite the fact that it was surgical. He was breastfed exclusively until he was 6 months old and has been weaning himself (he still nurses first thing in the morning, otherwise he takes soy formula and is working on solids). My OB has just referred me to a Parinatologist following my initial CBC results (11.1 hemoglobin and 31 hematocrit). Although I have experienced fatigue earlier in this pregnancy than in the last, I do not feel as though I am really high risk. In fact, no one ever mentioned the possibility of being high risk during my last pregnancy. My doc admits she may be overreacting as she has only had 2 patients before with Beta Thal, and is just following "book procedure". Does my condition in fact constitute a high risk pregnancy? Is it complicated by the fact that I am nursing in addition to being pregnant? Are there any helpful resources out there for understanding the effects of Beta Thal on pregnancy? Any information you have would be appreciated. Thanks!
