Unfortunately, catheters aren't any fun at all. I believe rule of thumb is: if you get an epidural, you get a catheter. But, you can ask them to insert the catheter AFTER you get the epidural and it is effective. The burning and irriation right after removal and upon urination for the first few times is normal. Just drink lots of fluid. Sorry I can't tell you much more about the other questions. Best Wishes.
