Re: breastfeeding/weaningFrom: Jessica (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 16 Feb 2002 07:24:25 -0600 (CST)
I've weaned three babies, and I've never had engorgement at the end- your baby must have beeen *very * efficient in that one nursing a day! ;-) I found, whenever I did have engorgement, for other reasons, that wearing the tightest bra I could squeeze into really helped- like a sports bra, as well as using cabbage leaves tucked into that bra (obviously, not when you're out and about). Another friend found that if she limited her liquids a little, it would help with engorgement. Whatever you do, though, don't express anything- it'll just signal your breasts to keep on producing. I completely understand your fear of mastitis- I've had it twice, and there's just no way to describe how awful it was... Try the tight bra, and the cabbage leaves. Also, there should be a lactation consultant on staff if you delivered at a hospital- you could call there and get some input, as well.... Good luck! Jessica
