A close friend of mine is from, and lives in Mexico. She has decided to terminate her preganancy of 5 weeks and does not have access, due to legality, of any safe clinical form of abortion. She has decided to use the over the counter ulcer medicine cytotec, containing the active ingredient Misoprostol and is not sure of the dosage. I have known other women in Mexico to take this drug vaginally at doses of about 400 micrograms every 3-4 hours until terminated...up to a certain maximum. Similarly, I have read many medical journal reports and studies that suggest up to three 800 microgram doses every 24 hours. Both these procedures followed by a medical checkup to ensure termination and proper evacuation of the foetus. My question is which of these methods would be more effective and safer? I realize that there is no certainty with this method but it is basically her only recourse due to unavailability of proffesionally-staffed abortion clinics or any other type of abortion medication such as RU486. I would greatly appreciate someone's opinion on this or an account of a previous experience with cytotec used alone for this purpose. Thanks
