Methotrexate/Birth DefectsFrom: Liz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 9 Feb 2002 13:20:52 -0600 (CST)
My husband and I have been trying to conceive for about 5 years without much luck (primarily due to tubal problems). We were about to begin preparations for IVF last November, but I unexpectedly got pregnant. It turned about to be a tubal pregnancy and was terminated in January with Methotrexate. I don't know what we were thinking, perhaps that it was a fluke, because we were not prepared for the discovery that I am pregnant once again in February. It appears to be a normal, uterine pregancy. However, I am very concerned that I took methotrexate about 30 days before becoming pregnant. I have no idea when I ovulated, but I apparently became pregnant at the first ovulatory cycle post methotrexate. I have also been off my folic acid because it interferes with the methotrexate and was not expecting to become pregnant. I would like to know the specific risks we would be accepting if we do not terminate this pregancy. Exactly how high is the risk of birth defects (and what birth defects) under these circumstances? Thank you. (P.S. I know that you cannot tell me what will happen to me and my child exactly; I just need to know the statistics if possible before making any final decisions.)
