Re: High HCG levels in early pregnancyFrom: Amanda (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 6 Feb 2002 20:45:54 -0600 (CST)
Hi there - I too thought I had abnormally high HCG early on - went from 64 to 1300 in 2 days. I'm now 28 weeks with a healthy pregnancy. First of all, the test came back incorrect from the lab, so errors do happen and could be the cause of your reading. And, as a previous poster noted, the difference between 6000 and 13000 is just 2-3 days of growth. Implantation usually happens from 7-10 days ovulation, so even if you are sure of when you last had your period and when you ovulated, there are several "wild card" days that will affect your HCG numbers. Downs can be a concern, as can a molar pregnancy (which was my big fear). However, your numbers are not out of line with where you should be - check out http://www.paternityangel.com for a great analysis of the range of hcg numbers at any given point. It just varies so much, and there's rarely any real reason to worry as long as they are climbing well. Your doc should order serial hcg counts to make sure that your numbers are increasing at an appropriate rate (doubling every 2-3 days or so) and hopefully he will do another ultrasound in 1-2 weeks to check for a fetal pole and heartbeat. For what its worth, I also had brown spotting at 7 weeks and 9 weeks, and all is well. At your stage it could just be leftover implantation bleeding, or irritation from the cervix, which gets highly vascular and sensitive during pregnancy. The fact that it is brown means it is old blood, and I was told that if it only lasts for a day or so and doesnt turn pink or red it's usually nothing to worry about. I thought I read in your response to the other poster that you had an u/s and saw the sac- I would imagine (again, based on what I was told when I was spotting)that if you were having a miscarriage the u/s would have shown fluid around the sac. Anyway, I know only a doc's response will really put your mind at ease, but I'll bet they'll say that everything looks good. Good luck to you!
